Can you make O-Rings so precise and constant in order to create a “controlled” leakage?

One of our existing customers was working on a new product type. Normally an O-Ring will create a block and seals. For this specific application a controlled leakage was mandatory and standard O-Rings failed due to the existing tolerances of class B (industrial standard) and class A (aerospace applications).

 

2. the process

How did we create the class A+ O-Ring?

Together with the customers engineering team we gathered all available and needed information in order to understand the goal.

In order to improve existing tolerances of our class A O-Rings it was needed to create a new multi precision injection moulding tool. With the new precision tool, our latest injection moulding production machine and a slightly revised FKM compound with a reduced  shrinkage we started a test. After evaluation we could see a further reduction of tolerances of +/- 25% compared to our class A O-Rings. We presented the results to our client and after a first laboratory test a significant improvement was found.
